DENTAL CROWN FAQS

If you need restorative dentistry in Redmond, Dr. Bickel of Redmond Art of Dentistry can get your smile back to optimal health. Dental crowns are a versatile restorative treatment that can be used in many different procedures. They can be used to cap cracked or damaged teeth, to preserve tooth structure after root canal therapy, and even as a cosmetic solution.

If you’re wondering whether a crown is right for you, or what to expect during treatment, here are a few common questions along with answers that will keep you informed and comfortable:

IS GETTING A DENTAL CROWN PAINFUL?

No! The process of getting a dental crown does not involve any serious oral surgery and is typically completely painless. Before a crown is placed, your tooth must be prepared by removing any damaged enamel. Then, the remaining enamel must be trimmed and shaped into a stable, solid platform upon which the new crown can be attached.

This process does involve removing some tooth material, but your mouth will be numbed and your enamel does not have any nerve endings, which means that there will be no pain. However, some patients may be uncomfortable due to the pressure and vibration of the dental drill. For these patients, we recommend sedation to help you feel more comfortable during the process.

There may be some discomfort after the procedure as your tooth heals, but this is typically minimal and subsides within a few days.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF DENTAL CROWNS?

There are a few different types of dental crowns. The most common are:

  • Metal crowns – Metal crowns are the oldest type of crown and are usually made of gold or stainless steel. These types of crowns are very durable and are known to last a long time, but have an unnatural appearance that does not match the surrounding teeth.
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns – Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns use a porcelain cap with a metal structure. This allows the durability of metal to be combined with the natural appearance of porcelain. Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns look and function just like natural teeth, making them a good choice for those who are concerned with the aesthetics of their smile.
  • All-resin crowns – These crowns are perhaps the most affordable option for many patients, and they are completely made of dental resin. While they do match your teeth, they are more susceptible to wear and damage compared to porcelain and metal crowns.
  • All-ceramic crowns – All-ceramic crowns are made completely out of porcelain and are often used for front teeth, as they offer the best color match with the surrounding teeth.

WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR A DENTAL CROWN?

Dental crowns are usually the best choice for any tooth that has been severely damaged by tooth decay or an oral injury. With a crown, you can prevent further tooth damage and infection, and restore your smile.

Dental crowns may also be used to replace large, worn-down fillings. You can also have an old metal crown removed and replaced by a porcelain crown if you would like to restore the natural appearance of your smile.
