DENTAL IMPLANTS VS. DENTAL BRIDGES

Dental Implants vs. Dental Bridges: 5 Major Differences Between These Treatments!

If you’re missing one or more teeth, you may be wondering what restorative treatment is right for you. Should you invest in dental implants, or choose dental bridges? Both treatments have their own pros and cons, and some major differences.

So, to help you make your decision, Redmond Art of Dentistry has put together a list of the top 5 differences between dental implants vs. dental bridges.

1. DENTAL IMPLANTS SUPPORT AND STRENGTHEN THE JAW

Dental implants are placed directly into your jaw bone. Thanks to the process of “osseointegration,” implants bond with the jaw and become a permanent part of your mouth. Just like a natural tooth, your dental implant will transmit the force and pressure of biting and chewing into your jaw bone. This stimulates it and prevents bone resorption, which is a common problem after you’ve lost a tooth.

In contrast, dental bridges simply attach to adjacent healthy teeth, and do not transmit any pressure into the jaw. This means your jaw bone will continue to deteriorate and become weaker.

2. BRIDGE PLACEMENT IS QUICK

The process of having a dental bridge placed usually only takes a few appointments over a period of 2-3 weeks. In contrast, the process of having a dental implant placed may take up to 3-6 months or longer. Bridges are a better choice if you want to restore your mouth quickly.

3. DENTAL IMPLANTS LAST LONGER AND ARE MORE DURABLE THAN BRIDGES

Placing a dental implant may take longer than bridges, but they last longer, too. Dental implants usually last 30+ years if you take care of your mouth properly, and most patients will keep them for the rest of their lives.

In contrast, dental bridges usually do not last longer than 15 years, even in the best-case scenario. This means that, in the long run, implants are a more convenient and cost-effective choice.

4. DENTAL BRIDGES ARE OFTEN COVERED BY INSURANCE

Dental implants are usually not covered by insurance, though this may vary based on your insurance provider. In contrast, dental bridges usually are covered, at least partially, by insurance.

If you are on a tight budget, this means that a dental bridge may be a better, more affordable option for restoring your smile.

5. DENTAL BRIDGES REQUIRE THE REMOVAL OF HEALTHY TOOTH ENAMEL

If you are restoring a tooth with a dental bridge, the adjacent healthy teeth must be trimmed so that two dental crowns can be placed to support the pontic (false tooth) that replaces your missing tooth. This removal of enamel is necessary for the procedure.

With a dental implant, this is not necessary. If you prefer a more conservative approach to dentistry that involves avoiding damage to healthy teeth, an implant may be a better option for you.
