first visit redmond

What to expect at your first visit with us

At Redmond Art of Dentistry we take pride in providing individualized quality dental care for patients from Redmond, Kirkland, Bellevue, Sammamish and surrounding areas.  Dr. Bickel and Dr. Merchant take time to get to know every new patient as a person and not just a “tooth.”  We listen to your oral health concerns and the doctors and staff are happy to answer any questions you may have.  We understand that no two people are alike, so we tailor your treatment plan specifically for you in order to achieve the goal of a healthy, beautiful smile.

Before your first visit we ask that you fill out both a Patient Information and Medical History form.  You may do this either by printing off the forms from our website or you may fill them out before your appointment in our office.  This allows us to get to know you better and to look for any health concerns that could affect treatment.

Your initial examination will include:

  • Full evaluation of your medical and dental history
  • Periodontal exam
  • X-rays and evaluation
  • Extra-oral and intra-oral exam
  • VELscope examination to detect early signs of cancer formation

Digital X-rays will be taken so we can evaluate the health of your entire mouth.  X-rays are recommended for patients who haven’t had them within the past year because decay often starts in areas that are not visible in an intraoral exam.  X-rays have the benefit of showing early signs of cavity formation to allow for intervention before it becomes a problem.  Every patient’s individual needs are taken in to account so Dr. Bickel may sometimes decide a patient would benefit from a different schedule for X-rays but, in general, the greatest preventative measure you can do for yourself is to update your X-rays on a yearly basis.  If you have current X-rays from a previous dentist please let our front desk know so we can request a copy in advance of your appointment.

The Doctor will then carefully evaluate the X-rays and review your dental and medical history. When you share your medical history with the doctor, be sure to provide complete, up-to-date information on your health. Please inform us if you have experienced recent hospitalization, surgery or if you have recently been ill. Also tell the doctor the names, doses, and frequency of any medications you are taking — whether prescription or over-the-counter products — and the name of your physician.  It’s easy to forget but our overall health can have an impact on our dental health, we want to make sure you get the best treatment to suit your specific needs.

It is also important to bring up any fears you may have about dental treatment.  Some people have had bad experiences with dentistry in the past; we understand that, therefore we strive to make your experience at Redmond Art of Dentistry the best you’ve ever had.  Share with us any apprehension you have to we can address your needs.

We then perform a comprehensive head and neck evaluation and intra-oral examination.  During this exam the doctor will diagnose any required treatment.   Upon the evaluation, the we will devise a comprehensive treatment plan for you, addressing your individualized needs and goals.

Next you will meet our hygienist for an evaluation of periodontal health and cleaning.  The periodontal evaluation is to examine the health of gums and bones of the jaw.  Your periodontal health is of the utmost importance to the future of your oral health.  We often relate it to the foundation of a house. If you don’t have a strong foundation it will slowly break down over time.  Therefore, we probe around all teeth with an explorer, looking for “deep pockets” among other variables.  This information is used to devise a periodontal treatment plan to insure you will have a healthy foundation for years to come.

Please allow 1.5 hours for this initial appointment. This will give Dr. Bickel and staff the time we need to give you top notch care and allow the opportunity for you to ask any questions you need.  The information collected in your first visit will help us select the safest and most effective method of treatment for you.  After this visit, your subsequent appointments for regular exam and cleaning will normally take half that time.
